Liaison and linking
Understand the difference between liaison and enchaînement using very frequent spoken French groups.
1. Objective
By the end, you will recognise common obligatory liaison and distinguish it from simple enchaînement.
2. I discover
Say aloud: les amis, vous avez, avec elle. In the first two groups a consonant appears between the words; in the third, the c in avec was already pronounced.
3. I understand
Liaison makes a normally silent final consonant audible before a vowel: les amis, vous avez. Enchaînement links an already pronounced consonant to the following syllable: avec elle. They are different phenomena.
Not every liaison is obligatory. Here, learn only the very frequent contexts shown in the examples.
4. Guided practice
5. Independent practice
6. I write / I speak
Produce three new examples that follow the rule exactly, then read them aloud.
7. Check my learning
8. What I remember
Liaison: les amis, vous avez, nous avons. Enchaînement: avec elle. Ask whether the final consonant was normally silent before the next word.
9. Now I can…
- I can recognise the feature in new words or phrases.
- I can use it without copying the examples.
