The 26 letters
French uses the same 26 basic Latin letters as English, but accents and letter combinations matter a lot for pronunciation.
Accents are useful clues
é, è, ê, à, ù, ç and ë are not decorative. They often signal pronunciation or distinguish words.
Learn patterns, not isolated letters
Combinations such as ou, on, an, ch and oi are more useful than memorising letter names alone.
Quick reference
| ou | roughly “oo” |
| ch | usually “sh” |
| oi | roughly “wah” |
| on | nasal vowel |
| ç | soft c / s sound |
