Stage 0 · A1 découverte
Often-silent final letters
Read words with silent final consonants and recognise common words where the final consonant is pronounced.
1. Objective
By the end, you will recognise several silent final letters without assuming that every final consonant is silent.
2. I discover
Compare: petit/sac; grand/chef; nez/bus. Is the final letter always pronounced?
3. I understand
Many final consonants are silent in frequent French words: petit, grand, nez, vous. But this is not absolute: sac, chef, bus and hiver keep their final consonant. Learn patterns together with reliable model words.
Do not mechanically drop every final consonant: some are pronounced. Use a dictionary or audio when unsure.
4. Guided practice
5. Independent practice
6. I write / I speak
Produce three new examples that follow the rule exactly, then read them aloud.
7. Check my learning
8. What I remember
Silent anchors: petit, grand, nez, vous. Pronounced anchors: sac, chef, bus, hiver. Learn the word with its pronunciation.
9. Now I can…
- I can recognise the feature in new words or phrases.
- I can use it without copying the examples.
