Stage 0 · A1 découverte
Level A1
Splitting a word into syllables — use it independently in context
Produce your own spoken-syllable split for frequent words and check it by pronouncing them slowly.
1. Objective
By the end, you will propose a sensible spoken-syllable split for simple words and check it by saying them aloud.
2. I discover
Try with tomate, cinéma and ordinateur. Do not look only at spelling: listen to pronunciation.
3. I understand
To split a word yourself, say it normally and then more slowly. Mark each voice beat with a hyphen: tomate → to-ma-te, cinéma → ci-né-ma, ordinateur → or-di-na-teur.

Watch out
This activity is about pronunciation. Typographic line-break rules are a different topic.
4. Guided practice
5. Independent practice
6. I write / I speak
Produce three new examples that follow the rule exactly, then read them aloud.
7. Check my learning
8. What I remember
Say the word normally, slow down, then mark the chunks you hear: tomate → to-ma-te.
9. Now I can…
- I can recognise the feature in new words or phrases.
- I can use it without copying the examples.
