Level A2+ / B1

Subject complement

Identify subject complements after French linking verbs and understand how they describe the subject.

Duration: 25 minPrerequisites: nature-fonctionValidation threshold: 80%

1. Objective

By the end, you will identify a subject complement after a linking verb and the subject it describes.

2. I discover

In Le café est chaud, remove chaud. What information about the coffee disappears?

3. I understand

A subject complement describes or identifies the subject through a linking verb such as être, sembler, devenir or rester. In Lina est médecin, médecin tells us about Lina. In Les rues deviennent calmes, calmes tells us about les rues.

Le café est chaud.Lina est médecin.Paul semble fatigué.La rue devient calme.Ils restent prudents.Ces fleurs sont rouges.
Watch out

A subject complement does not function like a direct object: it refers back to the subject and describes or identifies it.

Produce three new sentences that use the target feature precisely, then explain what you applied.

7. Check my learning

8. What I remember

9. Now I can…

  • I can recognise the feature in a new example.
  • I can reuse it in a meaningful sentence.
