Stage 2 · A1+ / A2
Types of sentences
Recognise declarative, interrogative, imperative and exclamative sentences in everyday contexts.
1. Objective
By the end, you will identify the type of a simple sentence from its purpose.
2. I discover
Compare: Tu viens demain. / Tu viens demain ? / Viens demain. / Quelle bonne nouvelle ! What does each sentence do?
3. I understand
Four common sentence types are distinguished by purpose: declarative for information, interrogative for questions, imperative for instructions, exclamative for strong reactions. Punctuation helps, but meaning and structure also matter.
An exclamation mark can accompany a command as well as an exclamation. First ask what the sentence is doing.
