Level A2+–B1

Placing an action before another past action — practise and choose the right form

Use the French pluperfect to show that one action had already happened before another past action.

Duration: 25 minPrerequisites: plus-que-parfait-emploi-repererValidation threshold: 80%

1. Objective

By the end, you will recognise and form the pluperfect to mark an earlier past action.

2. I discover

In Elle avait mangé avant de partir, which action was completed first: eating or leaving?

3. I understand

The pluperfect places one action before another past action. Quand je suis arrivé, le train était déjà parti. The departure happened before the arrival. Formation: imperfect of avoir or être + past participle.

j’avais finitu avais compriselle était partienous avions réservévous aviez vuils étaient arrivés
Watch out

The pluperfect is not just an isolated older past; its main job is to relate two past moments.

9. Now I can…

  • I can recognise the feature in a new example.
  • I can reuse it in a meaningful sentence.
