Stage 2 · A1+ / A2

Level A1+ / A2

a or à?

Distinguish verbal a from preposition à in common sentences using a replacement test.

Duration: 25 minPrerequisites: passe-recentValidation threshold: 80%

1. Objective

By the end, you will choose between a and à using the avait test.

2. I discover

Compare: Lina a un vélo. / Lina va à vélo. In which sentence can you replace a with avait?

3. I understand

a without an accent is a form of avoir: il a, elle a. à with an accent is a preposition: à Paris, à huit heures, à mon frère. Test: if avait can replace it, write a; otherwise it is often à.

Il a faim.Elle a deux frères.Je vais à Paris.Rendez-vous à huit heures.Il parle à Lina.On a le temps.
Watch out

The accent changes the word’s function. Do not choose by sound: a and à are pronounced the same.
