Stage 1 · A1
Level A1
g, ge and gu
Understand how g changes sound and how ge or gu preserve the intended sound in common words.
1. Objective
By the end, you will read and choose g, ge or gu in common words.
2. I discover
Compare “gare, girafe, nous mangeons, guitare”. Notice the letter after g.
3. I understand
g is usually /g/ before a, o, u and /ʒ/ before e, i, y. ge keeps /ʒ/ before a/o; gu keeps /g/ before e/i.
gare /g/gomme /g/girafe /ʒ/gel /ʒ/mangeons /ʒ/guitare /g/
Watch out
In words such as guerre or guitare, the u in gu usually serves to keep the hard /g/ sound.
4. Guided practice
5. Independent practice
6. I write / I speak
Write two words with /g/, two with /ʒ/, then a sentence with guitare or mangeons.
7. Check my learning
8. What I remember
g + a/o/u → often /g/; g + e/i/y → often /ʒ/; ge keeps /ʒ/; gu keeps /g/.
9. Now I can…
- I can predict the common sound of g.
- I can choose ge or gu to preserve the sound.
