Symbols & craftsmanship
Some Albanian symbols are instantly recognisable, but the stories behind them are usually richer than the image itself. A cap, a motif or a handmade object can mean something different depending on the region, the craft and the way it is used.
The double-headed eagle
The black double-headed eagle stands at the centre of the red national flag. In popular national imagery, the name Shqipëri is often associated with the eagle, although the word’s etymology is more complex.
Qeleshe
This white felt cap, also called plis in some contexts, has several regional forms. Its traditional production relies on wool and felt craftsmanship.
Textiles & crafts
Weaving, embroidery, wood, metal and stone reflect regional craftsmanship. Decorative motifs should not all be read as “national symbols” because their meaning often depends on place and use.
Mini vocabulary
