Traditional clothing

Traditional clothing tells you quite a lot before you even read a museum label. Region, textile skills, and sometimes age or social context. Today you are most likely to see these outfits at celebrations, performances, museums and cultural events.

Great diversity

Shapes, materials, embroidery and headwear vary by region, gender, age and context. It is more accurate to speak of Albanian traditional clothing in the plural.

Xhubleta

The xhubleta is a bell-shaped skirt traditionally worn in some northern mountain areas. The craftsmanship involved in making it is inscribed on UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.

Fustanella & other silhouettes

The fustanella, a pleated male garment found in several Balkan cultures, appears in some Albanian outfits. Vests, belts, aprons, headwear and embroidery complete other regional ensembles.
