A journey through the eras
Seven landmarks for hearing the evolution of a musical culture that has never stopped changing.
Before the 20th century
Ancient roots
Orally transmitted songs accompanied work, rites, celebrations and storytelling. Music first belonged to the community and its territory.
A living tradition
Iso-polyphony
In the South, solo voices intertwine with a collective drone. UNESCO inscribed the tradition in 2008 on the Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
North, South, cities and mountains
Instruments and regions
Lahuta, çifteli, clarinet and percussion give regional repertoires distinct colours. Lahuta was placed by UNESCO on the Urgent Safeguarding List in 2025.
First half of the 20th century
Modern song
Radio, stage and recording brought new voices forward. The serenades of Korçë became an important urban musical landmark.
Since 1962
Festivali i Këngës
RTSH’s major song contest became a national institution and a useful window onto changing musical styles.
1990s–2000s
Opening and diversity
Pop, rock, hip-hop and new productions circulated increasingly between Tirana, Prishtina and the diaspora.
2010s to today
Today’s scene
Pop, R&B, rap and pop-folk coexist with tradition. Albanian-speaking artists now circulate on international stages.
