Legends often change from village to village, family to family and generation to generation. Instead of looking for one definitive version, it is more useful to notice what the stories say about fear, honour, family and place.
The legend of Rozafa
Linked to Shkodër Castle, the story tells of a structure that collapses each night and a sacrifice that allows the walls to stand. Known in different forms across the Balkans, it brings together loyalty, motherhood and foundation.
Besa
Besa can evoke a given word, trust and honour. The term has a strong place in Albanian cultural imagination, but its meaning varies across periods and contexts and does not by itself define Albanian society.
Figures from folklore
Dragons, supernatural beings, heroes and mountain tales run through Albanian and Balkan folklore. Many motifs travel across neighbouring languages and regions.
