Stage 1 · A1
Level A1
Reading short Albanian words
Read short Albanian words using the regular letter-sound correspondence and respecting digraph letters.
1. Objective
By the end, you will decode short words from left to right without splitting digraph letters.
2. I discover
Read slowly: “bukë, ujë, dorë, mal, shok”. Which groups must stay together?
3. I understand
Albanian spelling is relatively regular: read letters in order and recognise digraphs as units. In shok, sh is one letter; in rrugë, rr is one letter. Keep ë and ç as full letters too.

Watch out
Do not drop ë just because it may sound weak: it is a letter and part of the word’s spelling.
4. Guided practice
5. Independent practice
6. I write / I speak
Choose eight short words. Mark the digraphs, then read each word slowly and again at normal speed.
7. Check my learning
8. What I remember
I read left to right. I keep dh/gj/ll/nj/rr/sh/th/xh/zh together. I do not drop ë or ç.
9. Now I can…
- I can decode short words.
- I recognise digraph letters while reading.
