Stage 1 · A1

Level A1

Noun gender

Recognise the gender of frequent Albanian nouns, especially by observing the definite form and learning each noun with its meaning.

Duration: 25 minPrerequisites: emriValidation threshold: 80%

1. Objective

By the end, you will distinguish frequent masculine and feminine nouns and use their basic definite form.

2. I discover

Compare: djalë → djali, libër → libri, vajzë → vajza, shtëpi → shtëpia. What do you notice in the definite form?

3. I understand

Albanian nouns have gender. Many masculine nouns have a definite form in -i or -u, while many feminine nouns have a definite form in -a or -ja. These are tendencies, not a complete rule, so learn the noun together with its definite form.

djalë → djali (m.)libër → libri (m.)burrë → burri (m.)vajzë → vajza (f.)motër → motra (f.)shtëpi → shtëpia (f.)
Watch out

Gender cannot always be predicted from the English translation. Learn “indefinite noun + definite form” as a pair.

4. Guided practice

5. Independent practice

6. I write / I speak

Choose six objects around you. Check their Albanian names and write the indefinite form, definite form and gender.

7. Check my learning

8. What I remember

Learn nouns with their definite form: libër/libri, djalë/djali, vajzë/vajza, shtëpi/shtëpia. Endings are clues, not an absolute guarantee.
